Understanding the Difference

Coaching and therapy are both valuable. They’re just different.

People often wonder whether they need a coach or a therapist. The short answer: it depends on what you’re working through. Here’s how to think about it.

A side-by-side look

Coaching

  • Focuses on the present and future
  • Helps you clarify goals and take action
  • Works with strengths and possibilities
  • Your coach is a thinking partner, not an authority
  • Sessions are on-demand or scheduled
  • No diagnosis or clinical treatment
  • Great for career decisions, getting unstuck, building confidence

Therapy

  • Often explores the past and present
  • Helps process emotions and heal
  • Addresses mental health conditions
  • Your therapist is a licensed clinician
  • Typically scheduled weekly
  • Can involve diagnosis and treatment plans
  • Essential for anxiety, depression, trauma, and other clinical needs

Coaching might be right for you if...

  • You’re facing a decision and want to think it through with someone
  • You know what you want but can’t figure out how to get there
  • You’re feeling stuck but not in crisis
  • You want a thinking partner, not a diagnosis
  • You’re looking for accountability and forward momentum
  • You need support right now, not in three weeks

Therapy might be a better fit if...

  • You’re experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, or mood changes
  • You’re processing trauma or grief
  • You’re having thoughts of self-harm
  • You need a clinical diagnosis or medication management
  • You want to explore deep-rooted patterns from your past

If you’re in crisis or experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, or reach out to a licensed therapist. Coaching is not a substitute for mental health care.

Can you do both?

Absolutely. Many people work with a therapist and a coach at the same time. Therapy helps you process and heal. Coaching helps you plan and act. They complement each other well.

Just make sure both your therapist and your coach know you’re working with someone else, so everyone’s on the same page.
